This book tells the tale of Rosie Revere, a young girl who dreams of becoming a great engineer. She creates fantastic inventions with everything from wire and old fans to spray cheese and doll parts. When people laugh at Rosie’s gizmos, she’ll need help from a special friend to find the courage to follow her dreams.
Snakes! at the Midwest Museum of Natural Hiss-tory
Join STEM Read as we talk about Rosie Revere, Engineer with Cindy Chang, executive director of the Midwest Museum of Natural History. We’ll explore snakes and see if Rosie’s snake-repelling helmet would actually work.
Engineering a Rosie Revere Snake Helmet with Pettee Guerrero
Pettee Guerrero demonstrates the engineering design process as she re-creates the snake-repelling helmet from Andrea Beaty’s imaginative book, Rosie Revere, Engineer.

Idea Sparks and Mini Lessons
These questions, prompts, and short activities provide quick ways to inspire interest and explore the STEAM concepts related to the book. Idea Sparks and Mini lessons can also be used for differentiation and to foster new ideas of your own.
Were you inspired by one of Rosie’s inventions? Create a snake-repelling hat to help keep snakes off your head. Learn interesting facts about snakes and what keeps them away while using the engineering design process to construct a hat. Think outside the box and put on your creativity cap!
Rosie loves to build things. Sometimes they work and sometimes they don’t. In this inter-disciplinary lesson, students will create a “robot” and then try out different objects to see which will best help their robot creation roll down a ramp. The lesson can easily be divided into 2 sessions, one for creating the robots and one for the testing sequence.
This teacher guide provides a lesson and template for making a paper plane. For additional templates, tutorials, and information of the science of flight, check out the I Am Amelia Earhart activities page.
