by STEM Read staff

It’s only early March, but we’ve got spring on our minds over here at STEM Read! And what better way to celebrate spring than with two exciting field trips.

Scythe: The STEM Read Experience with Special Guest Neal Shusterman

Field Trip dates: Tuesday, April 21 or Wednesday, April 22, 9:30 am – 2:30 pm (you choose your date). Recommended for grades 8 and up.

Scythe by Neal Shusterman

Join the STEM Read team and author Neal Shusterman for interactive games based on his Printz Honor-winning novel, Scythe, the first in his Arc of a Scythe series.

Imagine a world where disease, war, and hunger are taken out of the equation, a world where an elite group of Scythes control who lives and who dies. Governed by a supercomputer, the all-seeing Thunderhead, citizens go about their daily lives knowing they could be next person to be gleaned.

During the field trip, you’ll be immersed in the world of Rowan and Citra, two teens for whom this world is the only one they’ve ever known. You’ll experience life as a Scythe apprentice – and the moral, and physical challenges that come with it – by completing exciting STEAM-centric challenges and adventures, including the ethics of gleaning, the economics and math of mortality, and visual cryptography.

Award-winning writer Neal Shusterman will be at the field trip on both days, where he’ll speak about his craft and the inspirations behind his captivating work.
